Reasons to Visit London’s Shard Building
The Shard skyscraper was finally completed in spring of 2012 after nearly a decade in the planning and construction process. It’s been the subject of a Channel 4 documentary and also been center of much controversy from those who worried that it would marr London’s skyline.
Similar concerns were raised about older London icons the Millennium Dome and St. Paul’s Cathedral when they were first built. It’s interesting to compare the cost of building those buildings to the cost of constructing the Shard.
The Shard is largely owned by an investment group based in Qatar, joining the list of pricey London properties that are not owned by groups based in the capital. With the cost of building in the capital only on the rise, it will be interesting to see which investors move in to ensure that London’s tall buildings keep coming up.

Point of order, Mr. Higgonson!
The BT Tower (formerly the Telecom Tower, formerly the Post Office Tower) dates from the 1960s, not 1999.
Really? This was a guest post so I didn’t have anything to do with making it – will have to let them know they made a mistake. Thanks for that!
It was completed in 1964, and appeared in Doctor Who “The War Machines” two years later.
The more you know, aye! I’ve gotten in touch with the makers of the infographic – so they might get back in touch with me with an updated version.
Perhaps they meant that it’s been the BT Tower since 1999?
But it’s best to be clear about things, lest one inadvertently give out false information.
Possibly – will wait and see what they get back to me with, if they don’t update or let me know I may have to take it down.
Fair enough.
